Barker Says He'll Miss Show, But Leaving Is Right Choice
Published: Jun 7, 2007
Hosting "The Price Is Right" has been Bob Barker's routine for 35 years, but the game-show icon expected Wednesday's show to be anything but routine.
It was his last day in front of the "Price" cameras. In October he announced that, after 50 years on television, he would retire this month.
"I will enjoy it all the way through to June," he said at the time. "And I will regret not being at the show, I know, probably for the rest of my life because I've enjoyed it so much."
Barker, 83, said he'll leave viewers "the same way I've parted with them every day: 'Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered.' "
The program is scheduled to air on June 15.
"The Price Is Right" will continue in the fall with a new host, who has yet to be named. Among those reportedly in the running are Todd Newton of the E! network, Mark Steines of "Entertainment Tonight," George Hamilton and John O'Hurley.
Fans Not In Jeopardy Of Losing Host
The hoopla over Barker retiring as host of "The Price Is Right" has Alex Trebek thinking about his own future.
The 66-year-old host of "Jeopardy!" is in his 23rd year presiding over the syndicated quiz show.
"I don't have anything to prove anymore. Nor does Bob, although it is fun doing the show," Trebek told The Associated Press. "That's really what determines my longevity on 'Jeopardy!' - as long as I consider it a fun job to go to, and I do."
Bundchen Criticizes Catholic Church
Gisele Bundchen is the biggest international star on the runway during Rio's Fashion Week, but she also is making headlines for criticizing the Roman Catholic Church's opposition to condom use and abortion.
Bundchen told the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper that the church's take on contraception is hopelessly outdated because it was adopted when "the women were virgins, the guys were virgins."
"Today, no one is a virgin when they get married," she said.
She made the comments less than a month after Pope Benedict XVI criticized government-sanctioned abortion laws and birth control during a five-day visit to Brazil.
"How is it possible to not want people to use condoms and also not have abortions? It's impossible. I'm sorry," the 26-year-old supermodel told the newspaper.
Hilton Living The Simple Life In Jail
Soon after Paris Hilton reported to jail late Sunday night, her fashion-forward look changed dramatically.
After surrendering her possessions and changing into a standard-issue orange uniform, the 26-year-old was escorted by two sergeants to her tiny cell, her hands shackled behind her back and her hair tied in a scrunchie made from an elastic sock.
Life in the lockup hasn't been easy for the heiress.
She's in isolation for 23 of the 24 hours of the day in a 12-by-8-foot cell. Dinner on Monday was franks and beans, and lunch the next day was a bologna sandwich and two chocolate-chip cookies.
"She cries all day," a source tells People Magazine in its new issue. "She looks unwashed. She has no makeup, and her hair is tangled. She cried audibly through the first two nights."
