TV Stations Seek Graphic Photos Of Accused Teacher

TAMPA Two Tampa television stations have requested explicit photos taken of former schoolteacher Debra Lafave by police.

Courts spokeswoman Pam Bondi said Monday that WTSP Channel 10 and WFTS Channel 28 made written requests for the photos from the State Attorney's Office, citing Florida's public records laws.

Temple Terrace police took six photos -- two with Lafave in gynecological stirrups -- while investigating allegations she slept with a 14-year-old student. A search warrant was granted to compare descriptions given by the boy to Lafave's tan lines, pubic hair and tattoos.

Judge Wayne Timmerman has scheduled a hearing for today for arguments about whether the photos should be considered public records.

Lafave's attorney has called the pictures "pornographic."

WFTS News Director Chris Jadick said he does not foresee a scenario under which the photos would be aired. He said the station asked for the pictures as a "routine request."

Jadick said WFTS likely would not send a lawyer to today's hearing to argue on behalf of the photo's release.

WTSP's news director was unavailable for comment.

WFLA Channel 8 Assistant News Director Morris Pyle said the station would not air the photos if released. The station and The Tampa Tribune are owned by the same company.

But, he said, it is important for news organizations to ask for all manner of public documents, even if they are too explicit for broadcast. "We want to make sure we don't lock ourselves out of future requests by not acting now."
